The challenge

The client’s cold storage infrastructure consisted of multiple upright ULT freezers spread across several rooms.


This fragmented setup introduced significant operational and capacity limitations, including:

• Excessive floorspace usage
• High cumulative energy consumption (driving up operating costs)
• High CO₂ emissions
• Complex, decentralized workflows, requiring staff to handle and monitor equipment across multiple locations
• No scalable path forward, as adding capacity would require expanding the facility footprint

 

The decentralized layout not only increased day-to-day operational complexity but also made future growth and optimization nearly impossible under the existing configuration.

The Solution

A detailed performance and lifecycle assessment was conducted comparing 35 of the client’s upright ULT freezers with one Large-Scale Storage Unit (LSSU) carrying an equivalent storage capacity.

 

The analysis covered key operational metrics:

  • Physical footprint

  • Energy consumption

  • CO₂ emissions

  • Total cost of ownership over a 25+ year period, including both break-even and long-term ROI

 

All calculations were based on the client’s validated performance data combined with LOWENCO’s verified product test results.

The analysis showed that the large-scale solution delivered substantial improvements across all measured parameters:

 

  • 75% reduction in physical footprint
